Ride, baby, ride

Into the summer, into the sky

A beautiful song for a day like this.

Awesome cover of “I Will Dare” from Mates of State. Well, except for the chorus, which slows to a subdued crawl, the tempo transferring the the angst of the 80’s to the melodrama of the 00’s. It’s an analogy that does none of us any good.

God damn, I love Lucero. This video reminds me a bit of The Replacements’ clip for “When It Began”, sans the claymation and East Village.

Alt-country, y’all.

Boardwalk Empire

I just started reading Nelson Johnson’s Boardwalk Empire, which chronicles Atlantic City’s rise to prominence. It’s the basis of the new Martin Scorsese and Terrence Winter vehicle premiering on HBO this fall. The series will star Steve Buscemi as political machine boss, Nucky Johnson. Perfect casting:

“Tall (6 feet 4 inches), trim, and broad-shouldered, Nucky Johnson was a ruggedly handsome man with large, powerful hands, a glistening bald head, a devilish grin, friendly gray eyes, and a booming voice.”

The 5’9” Buscemi should pull it off well — especially this scene, as told by Nucky’s former driver:

“There I am driving along talking to Mr. Johnson with a pretty little tart seated next to him. The next thing I knew she’s got her head in his lap and Mr. Johnson’s grinnin’ from ear to ear.” The boss never missed a chance to mix pleasure with business.

Heh.

I don't like Alex Cora. Who? Yeah, that's right. »

Major League Baseball players are a rarely-talented, gifted few with an ultra-competitive quality bred by years of trying to prove their worth. No professional ballplayer is looking to the worst player on the team for leadership. Leaders must be able to “back it up” in a way that Alex Cora – a 34-year-old utility player who’s been an irregular since 2004 – can’t.
